Black Bottom Lighters Launches Kickstarter Campaign

Black Bottom Lighters has been performing alternative reggae tunes, reminiscent of 311 and Sublime, since 2010, and in the process has garnered over 3,000 followers on both Facebook  and Twitter. And now, the Phoenix-based band is finally set to release its debut album, but the members need your help.

To assist with the cost of recording an album, to be released next month, and embarking on a West Coast tour, BBL has launched a Kickstarter.

Fans can can donate $5 or more to help with the band’s costs and receive prizes, from an official “Black Bottom” lighter to a personal performance at the location of your choice. The band is looking to raise $5,000 by Thursday, Nov. 29.

Can you give us a little background on who you are (location, age, how you got involved in making music)?
We are Black Bottom Lighters, a Phoenix-based reggae rock band from the west valley. We started as a band in the summer of 2010, when lead singer Stilly and Taide (rhythm guitar and vocals) first jammed together and almost instantly came up with the song “Words To Say.” Soon after, we picked up Jose on the bass, McPhatty on the drums, Rush on the turntables, Kelyn on the keys, and Phil on the lead guitar.

How long have you been making music?
As a band, we’ve been making original tunes for more than two years now. As individuals, we all come from different musical backgrounds and started learning music at a very young age.

Who/what are your influences?
All of us have significant influences from different genres. As a vocalist, Stilly’s influences are Bradley Nowell from Sublime and Anthony Kiedis from Red Hot Chili Peppers. Taide’s influences include Bob Marley, Steel Pulse, and Damian Marley.

How did you come up with your name?
The name was actually brought up when Stilly was jamming in a garage with a couple of friends… they talked about the name but never used it. So when Stilly and Taide got together it just fit.

Upcoming projects? Name of EP? Where are you looking to tour?
As of right now, we are set to release our self-titled Black Bottom Lighters EP in mid-December and are planning a CD release show. We’re looking to set up a tour early 2013 starting in California and going up the coast. We also plan on playing in New Mexico and Colorado in the future.

Anything you’d like readers to know that we haven’t asked you about?
Do what makes you happy. If you want to change something, then do it! Also, a big thank you to our sponsors Arizona Cannabis Society for believing in us and helping with the production of our debut EP.
