Review: Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, Speedy Ortiz
If you did not attend last night’s Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks and Speedy Ortiz show at Crescent Ballroom, you may have started April as a fool. The frill-free show was one of my favorites so far this year and proof that good music can be enough. The bands were complementary, the fans shared a mutual respect and admiration for the musicians, and the music, well, it was enough to coax a 21+ crowd to come to a late show on a Tuesday night.
It helped that the night involved chats about Puddle of Mudd, Taylor Swift, The Fall‘s Mark E. Smith, “Turbo mutha fuckin Fruits” fruit distribution company, cops using walkie talkies and wasting the city’s energy, and casinos. Plus, the encore featured a Pavement track and birthday cake. Irresistible.
