Day two of McDowell Mountain Music Festival included a sizable crowd. Most came fully prepared with umbrellas, chairs, blankets and everything else needed for camping out in direct sunlight for hours. People of all ages, including a lot of kids, lazed around the festival grounds. There are plenty of shaded areas around the park and luckily for everyone (including those who didn’t buy a ticket and stood outside of the gates to experience MMMF), the music carries to every spot. There’s no F.O.M.O. (fear of missing out) when you can hear the main-stage band playing loud and clear in the furthest row of port-a-johns…or even blocks away.

The main stage hosted a diverse lineup — from the Americana singer-songwriter style of Ryan Bingham to the electronic tunes of Break Science, and jangly indie rock from Real Estate to a mixed bag of sound curated by the established act Thievery Corporation.

The Spec‘s favorite performances of the day:

Alexis: I had never seen Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue before and had no idea what to expect. The band brought a smile and infectious energy to the crowd with its electric guitars and brass instruments. The group even had some photographers in the press pit dancing. Covers of Green Day‘s “Brain Stew” and Jessie J‘s “Bang Bang” were pleasant surprises.

Dee: Not only was Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue my favorite act of the day, the act was also a new discovery for me. The band drew one of the liveliest crowds of the day, which makes sense because the musicians are so spirited on stage. Another bonus was being able to meet Trombone Shorty after the set. He gave us a warm hug as if we were close friends or family, not complete strangers.

Check out some of our favorite photos snapped at day one of the festival below and keep and eye on The Spec for more photos and videos in the coming days…
