Recap: McDowell Mountain Music Festival, Day One

Passion PIt, MMMF 2015

Passion Pit at MMMF

Yesterday’s 90-degree temps didn’t keep a crowd of music fans from gathering at Margaret T. Hance Park in Phoenix to ring in day one of McDowell Mountain Music Festival. In its 12th year, the organizers of the not-for-profit event have gone above and beyond to improve the experience for festival-goers, operating under a “party for the people” mentality.

There was a lot to see and do at the event, and those in attendance were in high spirits (literally and figuratively). The slow, hot start to the day was offset by the cool, spirited night in which the largest throng of people came together to experience main stage closing acts, Portugal. the Man and Passion Pit.

The Spec‘s favorite performances of the day:

Alexis: Passion Pit. They brought enough energy to wake everyone up after a long day in the sun.

Dee: Catching DJENTRIFICATION on the local stage was refreshing, especially after seeing laptops on stage with Slow Magic and Robert Delong (both good in their own right), but my favorite main-stage performance was by Portugal. the Man. The band has a powerful stage presence and played a few covers, including “Hey Jude” by The Beatles, “Another Brick in the Wall” by Pink Floyd, and Oasis‘ “Don’t Look Back in Anger.”

Check out some of our favorite photos snapped at day one of the festival below and keep and eye on The Spec for more photos and videos in the coming days
