Psyko Steve to Open Rebel Lounge Venue in Phoenix

The Rebel Lounge

Since 2000, Stephen Chilton has been booking and promoting shows around the Valley as Psyko Steve Presents (PSP).

PSP is majorly involved with helping grow and maintain the music scene in Phoenix and shows no signs of stopping. Holding close to his company’s mission to “produce the best events today for the bands you will be in love with tomorrow,” Chilton is set to open a new music venue, The Rebel Lounge, in the building once famously known as The Mason Jar.

Most who have frequented shows around Phoenix over the past few decades are familiar with the Mason Jar. If the walls of the building could talk, they would have a lot to say. The mid-size venue in Central Phoenix, which opened its doors in 1979, was the hot spot for notable rock bands (before they were notable), including Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Tool.

“Some of the first national artists I ever booked shows for were at the Mason Jar,” says Chilton. “It is great to be bringing a music venue back there.”

During the 2000s, the space was made over and got a second wind under the new ownership of Michael “Mick” Manfredi. It began to host a diverse lineup of metal, indie, country and modern rock bands — think MegadethJimmy Eat World, Hank Williams III and The Black Keys. PSP was able to book several bands at the Jar —Avenge Sevenfold, The Bled and Greeley Estates, to name a few– before it was sold by Manfredi in 2005.

Over the past decade, the building has been home to Velocity Nightlife and Anvil nightclubs, but the space will come full circle with Chilton’s plans. “I have always booked a lot of new music of all types, from punk rock and metal to indie rock and country. Anyone who has paid attention to the shows I have been booking in Phoenix won’t be surprised by what they see at the Rebel. Hopefully people will see something new for the first time that they will fall in love with,” Chilton says.

There is no exact date set for the opening of the venue, but PSP already has shows lined up for May — GBH with Total Chaos, Scorpion Vs. Tarantula and Rotten Youth on May 26, and William Elliot Whitmore with Esme Patterson on May 30. Several other events are scheduled at Rebel Lounge through July, including Blunt Club with DJ Pickster One.
