Sigur Rós ‘The Valtari Mystery Film Experiment’ at FilmBar

Sigur Ros, Valtari, Valtari Mystery Film Experiment, Filmbar PhoenixValtari is the sixth album from the post-rock, ambient band Sigur Rós and foundation of “The Valtari Mystery Film Experiment.”

The experiment, which includes more than a dozen short films, both official and fan-made, will screen at small and unconventional venues (rock clubs, hairdresser salons, hardware stores) in all seven continents. Phoenix‘s own FilmBar will present the film on Dec. 7 and Dec. 8.

Released in May 2012, Valtari is a collection of tracks recorded since 2003. The album was not intended to be released in film format, but “because of the way it was conceived and executed and pulled together, they [Sigur Rós] felt quite weird about how they were going to explain it because when you normally make a record, you have an idea,” says Rós’ manager John Best. “You go in and record it in one go. The previous album [Inni] was recorded in 10 days, this [Valtari] was recorded in 10 years.”

Sigur Rós gave a handful of filmmakers a budget “to create whatever comes into their head when they listen to songs from the band’s new album.” As the website states, “the idea is to bypass the usual artistic approval process and allow people utmost creative freedom.”

The Icelandic band has been active since 1994 and released two other films.  In 2007, there was “Heima,” a documentary film featuring live footage of a previous Iceland tour. “Inni,” a live motion picture and album that played at large venues across the world, debuted in 2011.

Tickets are currently on sale for the December screenings of “The Valtari Mystery Film Experiment” at FilmBar. Attendees must be 21+, purchase admission here. To view a complete list of worldwide screenings, visit the official Sigur Rós website.
