Tea for Tyrants is a new company dedicated to providing customers with a sensory experience by pairing quality tea with independent music.

“The idea for Tea for Tyrants originated during the time bandmate and co-founder Andy Angelos and I were brainstorming how to launch a new EP for our group Lovely Tyrants,” Tea for Tyrants co-founder Phil Lomac tells The Spec. “We wanted to do something different than just the standard CDs at the release show, so we packaged our new release in the form of a green tea product.”

Skip ahead 10 months after the EP release and the pair is launching a Kickstarter campaign to earn $7,500 to fund the company. More than 150 backers helped them raise $8,540.

Today, Tea for Tyrants is in full operation. It currently carries two kinds of Gyokuro, Sencha Fukamushi, Houjicha Bancha (roasted green tea) and Organic Matcha, which are all grown at a tea farm in south central Japan. The company’s Coastal Mint green tea is grown in South Carolina at one of the only tea gardens in the continental US. Every two- or four-ounce tin of tea comes with a tea card that includes brewing instructions, as well as free music downloads.

The company will soon celebrate six months in business and is currently in the process of finding independent tea and coffee shops that will carry its products. It is also hoping to distribute the music of its featured artists to their local patrons. For now, the tea is available for purchase through the company’s small online shop.

Tea for Tyrants is for everyone — from green tea enthusiasts who are always looking for new variations to try, to music lovers who delight in discovering and supporting independent artists from around the globe. “The love and feedback from everyone in the music community and beyond has been amazing and we were able to contribute a small amount back to our participating artists. We just have to keep getting the word out!”
