“Live, travel, adventure, bless, and don’t be sorry.” — Jack Kerouac, “On the Road”

It sounds like a dream.

You’re anticipating the arrival of a train carrying precious cargo — creative pioneers, musicians and artists. You may be in New York standing in a line to get into the state-of-the art Duggal Greenhouse to see Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin‘s offspring perform alongside psychedelic pop musician Connan Mockasin. Or, you are all the way across the country in Oakland, Calif. at the historic 16th Street Station anticipating another interactive live performance by Dan Deacon.

What sounds like a dream is a reality called Station to Station: A Nomadic Happening, a project by artist Doug Aitken. Seemingly powered by the creatives on board, one train will travel from station to station, stopping at nine points (New York, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Minneapolis/St Paul, Santa Fe/Lamy, Winslow, Barstow, Los Angeles, Oakland/SF) between Sept. 6 and Sept. 28.

The Nomad Happening is a chance for artists to come together for the greater cause of “pushing art and culture outside of institutional constraints.” The project, which is sponsored by Levi’s®, will raise money through ticket sales to donate to non-traditional programs and exhibitions at partner museums around America, including Carnegie Museum of Art, Walker Art CenterMoMA PS1the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, SITE Santa Fe, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), and Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).

“At each stop, Station to Station will curate leading figures from the art, music, culinary, literary, and film worlds for a series of cultural interventions and site-specific happenings. The Aitken designed train turned kinetic sculpture will act as a cultural studio— globally broadcasting unique content and experiences from the stops as well as on the moving train,” reads a press release.

Musical participants will include Cat Power, Twin Shadow, Beck, The Congos, Yoshimio, Sun Araw, Nite Jewel, Giorgio Moroder, Lucky Dragons, The Black Monks of Mississippi, Eleanor Friedberger, THEEsatisfaction, Charlotte Gainsbourg, No Age, Savages and more. To see a full list of artists, as well as info on who they are and where they will be performing, check out the Station to Station participants page.

Tickets for the event went on sale earlier this month and are priced reasonably at $25. Three of the nine stops have already sold out: Sante Fe/Lamy on Sept. 18, Winslow on Sept. 21, and Los Angeles on Sept. 26. To purchase admission to other locations, visit the official Station to Station website.
