To commemorate 20 years since the release of Natalie Merchant‘s multi-platinum 1995 album, Tigerlily, Nonesuch Records is releasing Paradise Is There: The New Tigerlily Recordings on Nov. 6. This release is an album and film. On the record, Merchant revisits and redefines the 11 songs on the popular ’90’s album, utilizing acoustic arrangements in many of the new tracks. The film is a composition of insightful interviews, live performances and other archival footage showcasing Merchant’s musical career, including the impact Tigerlily has had on her and her fans.
“I decided to make the Paradise Is There album and film for them, to honor the journey that we, and these songs, have all taken. Songs have new life breathed into them every time they are sung. Time has changed them as much as it has changed me […] I wanted to record these songs again because it seemed unfair to confine them to the way that they were performed in the studio in 1995. They are so versatile, whether I strip them bare or enhance them with strings, and they lend themselves so well to re-arrangement.”
This film memoir screens at FilmBarin Phoenix on Monday, Oct. 26. Tickets, $9, are available online through TicketFly.
