Tune In: Phoenix-Based Above the Radio

Whether you delight in the tunes that are on mainstream radio or not, the music played is a reflection of what the greater population enjoys. If you can’t get in unison with One Direction, have no interest in calling Carly Rae Jepsen and don’t want Justin Bieber as your boyfriend, aren’t feeling as young as Fun. suggests, and want to cut mainstream radio off, as if it were Gotye, may we suggest Above.fm.

Above.fm hasn’t made a full launch yet, but promises to be an online outlet for music enthusiasts and makers. Similar to Last.fm and Pandora, the website allows users to stream music by independent and unsigned artists.

Loran Glaser, Brian Peters and Trevor Martin are the people behind the operation. Their shared passion for music, disinterest in “cookie cutter musicians,” and drive to create rather than complain is what led to Above the Radio.

Above the Radio users can:

  • Stream independent music
    • Discover new artists
    • Get recommendations
    • Make playlists
  • Connect with musicians and people with similar music taste through forums
  • Read music reviews and columns
  • Participate in contests and giveaways
    • Last month the site teamed up with director Gordon Cowie to host a music video contest. Phoenix‘s one-man band Yus won and announced that his track “Girls” will soon be in video form.
Unsigned musicians can:
  • Get exposure
    • Receive music feedback
    • Run Reports
    • Interact with fans
    • List events
    • Utilize unlimited upload space

Free beta accounts are available now. Sign up here, or stay in the know about the official launch and other Above news on Facebook and Twitter.
