MP3s: Kid Wave ‘Honey,’ ‘Best Friend’

Kid Wave, Wonderlust, Kid Wave Wonderlust, Kid Wave music

Set to release its album Wonderlust (great name) on Heavenly Recordings on June 2, the Kid Wave foursome has released singles “Honey” and “Best Friend.” Both are as sweet as their titles suggest. They are sun-faded pop tunes and slacker rock that sound more California than California. The irony is that the music was produced in London, an almost-always gray and cold place where the band is currently based.

Many of the songs to be released on the debut cover the topics of desire and struggle, which band founder and singer-songwriter Lea Emmery experienced when she made the move from Sweden to London in 2011 at 18 years old. It was a big move —she didn’t know anyone– but ambition and a vision can propel a person forward, often when they feel the least in control. What started as solo demos soon became Kid Wave, a duo with another Sweden transplant Mattias Bhatt on guitar. The two added Serra Petale on drums and Harry Decon on bass and the two-guy, two-gal ensemble was officially born.
