On Oct. 16, Small Black will release its third full-length, Best Blues. The album is focused around loss– of people and memories– and came to be after Hurricane Sandy flooded the New Jersey family home of singer Josh Hayden Kolenik.

“I spent months trying to scan all these images and letters, most covered with ocean dirt, and in doing so discovered what people often find in their family’s past: that they are a hell of a lot like those who’d come before,” says Kolenik in a press release.

There are highs and lows in life, a desire to remember the past but also to let it go. This dichotomy is represented well through the lyrics and music of the album’s first released track, “Boys Life.

The chorus somberly repeats, “pictures of youth/picturing you,”  over an upbeat and almost dancey synth.
