MP3: Holly Miranda ‘All I Want is to be Your Girl’

Holly Miranda, All I want is to be your girl, holly miranda self-titled album

Holly Miranda is short and sweet in “All I Want is to be Your Girl,” a new single from her self-titled sophomore album due out May 19 on Dangerbird Records.

Her guitar as a wingman, Miranda opens with “The days are shorter, but the nights are long / We could fuck in the sun and dance till dawn / and all I want is to be your girl.” What follows is an unembellished, unapologetic love song that deserves a spot on a mixtape curated for a crush.

Miranda has been making music for more than a decade, spending a majority of her career performing with the band The Jealous Girlfriends. Before meeting Alex Lipsen and forming the Girlfriends, Miranda took piano training, self-taught herself the trumpet and guitar, and released a 20-track solo album called High Above the City: Evolution.

In more recent years, she has returned her focus to her solo career, spending time honing her style. The forthcoming release was inspired by Miranda’s time in the desert. She felt lead to Joshua Tree, where she booked an impromptu space for a month so that she could write new music, “It was about getting away from the chatter of Los Angeles and reconnecting with myself and nature. I had a bit of writer’s block after the last record, I wasn’t having fun anymore and I really needed to get back the core of why I started making music 17 years ago.” she says.

The Detroit-born singer-songwriter returned to Brooklyn after her trip and began recording most of her second record. On the new album, Miranda admits: “This is the most honest thing I’ve ever made; it’s very raw and is a contrast to what I’ve done in the past.”
