Mix: Flight

southwest airlines, flight mix, mixtape, songs about flying, songs about the sky, songs about airplanes

On this day in 1971, Southwest Airlines began operating from its Dallas, Texas headquarters. In honor of the consistently affordable and “bags fly free” airline, we’ve created a mix of airplane-related tunes.

Happy birthday, Southwest!

Listen below to some of The Spec editors’ favorite songs about the sky and flying…

“If you can use some exotic booze / There’s a bar in far Bombay / Come on and fly with me, let’s fly, let’s fly away”

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bzge5vY72hE?hl=en"><img src="http://thespecblog.com/wp-content/plugins/images/play-tub.png" alt="Play" style="border:0px;" /></a>Artist: M83 | Song: We Own the Sky
“We kill what we build / Because we own the sky”

“There’s somewhere far away from / The sight of my hands / The sight of me not moving / You can’t just hop a plane / And come and visit me again”

DEE’S PICKS:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pZkZguPAPs?hl=en"><img src="http://thespecblog.com/wp-content/plugins/images/play-tub.png" alt="Play" style="border:0px;" /></a>Artist: Local Natives | Song: Airplanes
I don’t think this song is specifically about airplanes or flying, but I really like this line “I bet when I leave
my body for the sky the wait, the wait will be worth it.”

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUdy1xVXak0?hl=en"><img src="http://thespecblog.com/wp-content/plugins/images/play-tub.png" alt="Play" style="border:0px;" /></a>Artist: Yeasayer | Song: I Remember
So the story goes that Chris Keating wrote this as a love song about a woman, who later became his wife, he met and kissed on an airplane. “I remember making out on the airplane / Still afraid of flying, but with you I’d die today / Whoa”

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GHyLhbdzN0?hl=en"><img src="http://thespecblog.com/wp-content/plugins/images/play-tub.png" alt="Play" style="border:0px;" /></a>Artist: Bright Eyes | Song: At the Bottom of Everything
I play this song every time I am on a plane, mostly for the introduction. “We must plunge, we must plunge, we must plunge”

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6H8WcTPnWM?hl=en"><img src="http://thespecblog.com/wp-content/plugins/images/play-tub.png" alt="Play" style="border:0px;" /></a>Artist: Neutral Milk Hotel | Song: In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
I had to. “And one day we will die / And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea / But for now we are young / Let us lay in the sun / And count every beautiful thing we can see / Love to be / In the arms of all I’m keeping here with me”

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhZjHtLatK4?hl=en"><img src="http://thespecblog.com/wp-content/plugins/images/play-tub.png" alt="Play" style="border:0px;" /></a>Artist: Theophilus London | Song: Flying Overseas
This song is great on so many levels, and it feels like floating. “Let’s lay in the wind and get driven by the forces”
