What I Learned at Bandcamp: The Smiling Faces

The Smiling Faces, interview, bandcamp

The Smiling Faces is a Phoenix-based rock trio that just released its first demo in July. The group is passionate about the music it makes and having a good time. If you’d like to see the band live, catch them Friday, Oct. 2 at Lawn Gnome Publishing.

In the meantime, read The Spec‘s interview with The Smiling Faces and listen to tracks from the demo…

Tell us a little about yourselves…
We are a rock band, of rock vigillantes, from rockin’ Phoenix, Ariz.. We play our rock music around the rockin’ town and recorded a sweet little rock demo called The “Too Many Mikes” Demo that we rockin’ think is pretty rock fuckin’ rockin’.

How long have you been making music?
Ben: Probably since I was, like, 5.
Josh: I think I started making music, like, three years after 9/11.
Eric: “If this love is electic, it’ll be flowing on the streets. Night after night, just to get through the week. Sometimes, it’s hard.”

Who/what are your influences?
Eric: Drugs.
Josh: Drugs. (Just kidding, mom.)
Ben: Drugs. (I’m not kidding, mom.)

What is your favorite song you’ve released and why?
Ben: I don’t know, man. What’s your favorite song?
Josh: I don’t really like any of those songs anymore, I’ve just listened to them way too fucking much.
Eric: When I was 15, I covered every instrument on “Peace Frog” by The Doors using only sounds from my mouth. Probably that.

Upcoming projects, where do you want to go from here?
Ben: I would be really interested in making background music for pornography in the future. I would love to be a well-respected porno bassist. No hardcore, though. Only softcore.
Josh: Dude, I wanna get enough money to buy a 3D printer that can print all of my clothes and food so I never have to work again. Investing in 3-D printer stock right now? That’s the way to go.
Eric: I’d like to go to the moon.

If you could no longer be a musician, what would you be or do for a living?
We don’t make a living off being musicians at all. We have four songs out. We all work at the grocery store and we guess we’d just do that forever because we have no choice.

What musicians or bands do you look up to?
Ben: Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant, also Jimmy Page.
Josh: Queens of the Stone Age, Christina Aguilera, The Faceless, N*Sync for their choreography, and Backstreet Boys for their music. It’s all about Justin in N*Sync. The rest of that band is just living in the shadow. I feel bad for them.
Eric: GG Allin, because he took a shit on stage and that’s pretty nuts.

Why do you make music?
Ben: It’s better than suicide, I guess.
Josh: It fights my depression.
Eric: Everything else confuses or upsets me.

Anything else you’d like readers to know that we haven’t asked you about?
Josh: I just wanna let the people know that we all really enjoy playing music, and we enjoy playing music together, and if we can make music that other people enjoy, then that’s even greater.

  1. Oh. My. God. I love these guys. I’ve been to 3 of their shows already but I’m always too nervous to say hi. Josh is so good at those drums I can only imagine how good he is at other rhythmic activities.

  2. I think I just fell in love with three guys at once.
