What I Learned at Bandcamp: Diet Cig

Diet Cig, interview, bandcamp, The Rebel Lounge

Diet Cig formed in 2014 after Alex Luciano interrupted the set of Noah Bowman‘s band Earl Boykins to ask for a lighter. There was no lighter, but a friendship formed and the duo released its debut, Over Easy, in February 2015.

On Sept. 9, the New Yorkers will play The Rebel Lounge in Phoenix. Purchase tickets here and stream the band’s new 7-inch on Bandcamp.

Read our interview with the band, below…

Tell us a little about yourselves…
Alex Luciano (vocals, guitar): I’m totally obsessed with crafts and dancing like an idiot whenever humanly possible. I love pickles and selfies and other people’s pets.

Noah Bowman (drums): I loooooove basketball! Everything about it!

How long have you been making music?
AL: Diet Cig is the first band I’ve ever been in, so just about a year now! We started this project in August 2014, and it’s been a seriously fun year.

NB: Since I can remember, really! My father is a drummer, so we always had kits set up at the house to jump on, and bang around.

Who/what are your influences?
AL: Everyone!! Such a hard question… Best Coast and Hop Along are two artists I think do their thing better than anyone else. They rule so hard, and made music sound fun to make.

NB: My pops is a big influence, as well as my mom.

What is your favorite song you’ve released and why?
AL: I love “Pool Boyz” because it’s so fun to play and there is such a ridiculous story behind it. “Harvard” is probably my favorite though because it is the best ‘fuck you’ I have ever written.

NB: I have to agree that “Pool Boyz” is a lot of fun to play live. Been really feeling the new tune “Dinner Date” – it just RAWKS!

Upcoming projects, where do you want to go from here?
AL: We’re currently writing a full-length record, and hoping to tour a lot! Super stoked on the tour coming up currently, it’s our first coast to coast. As for other projects… still a secret. 😉

NB: Touring and writing. Just keep having fun and meeting new people!

If you could no longer be a musician, what would you be or do for a living?
AL: I would totally be a cheesy Disney sitcom star… it would be so fun to hang with Selena Gomez and all those babes all day! Or maybe an ethical taxidermist?

NB: Build houses or pro basketball player.

What musicians or bands do you look up to?
AL: Everyone who’s doing it the way they want to! All of our friends in the music scene are stellar people, and I look up to them because they’re the ones busting their butts to just do what they love!

NB: Any band that’s putting their all into it.

Why do you make music?
AL: Any excuse to dance like an idiot on stage…

NB: It’s fun!

Anything else you’d like readers to know that we haven’t asked you about?
AL: We want to have a slumber party with you on our tour!! <3

NB: I’m a twin?
