What I Learned at Bandcamp: Born of the Stars

Born of the Stars

Born of the Stars is a solo project created by musician Michael Kushner. Kushner wrote, performed, mixed, mastered, and produced the band’s debut album, which was released in October 2012.

Based out of Queen Creek, Ariz., Born of the Stars covers a range of genres including alternative rock, hard rock, progressive metal, electronica, and post rock. The band’s self-titled debut is available for purchase and streaming on Bandcamp.

The Spec talked to Kushner about his future plans with Born of the Stars, read what he had to say below…

How long have you been making music?
I’ve been making music for over a decade, but I started writing music for Born of the Stars in 2011.

Who/what are your influences?
Tool, Devin Townsend, Nero, 30 Seconds to Mars, The Smashing Pumpkins, Trifonic, Dream Theater, BT, Meshuggah, Mt Eden, NIN, Pendulum, King Crimson.

Why did you choose Born of the Stars as your band name?
The band name and the concept behind the debut EP were inspired by one of the most beautiful and inspiring scientific facts: We are all stardust. All of the atoms in our bodies came from stars that died and exploded. We are in the universe and the universe is in us. We are all connected to each other biologically, to the earth chemically, and to the universe atomically. We are all born of the stars.

Upcoming projects, where do you want to go from here?
I’m currently working on a full album for Born of the Stars, which should be out sometime in 2013. I’m also working on putting together a band to perform live. Sign up for the free newsletter at to stay up to date or follow me on Twitter and Facebook.

What inspires your music?
Art, music, life, philosophy, science, space, nature, meditation.

Why do you make music?
“A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself.” – Abraham Maslow.
