What I Learned at Bandcamp: Bear State

Bear State Bandcamp

Art by Josh Dailey of Media15

Bear State is a five-piece shoegaze band based out of Phoenix. The group released a four-track album titledĀ Cassette, in August and three singles in October. All music can be downloaded for free on Bandcamp.

Lead singer, 23-year-old Caleb Dailey, says he began playing as a teen after he got a guitar for Christmas. “I would play it for hours just trying to play something cool enough to show my older brothers.”

The Spec caught up with Dailey about Bear State’s future plans, read what he has to say below…

How long have you been making music?
About eight or nine years now.

Who/what are your influences?
I really dig Yuck.

How did you come up with your name?
‘Bear State’ is technically Arkansas, but everyone thinks it’s California. My ancestry is heavy in Arkansas, and I grew up in California. Thought that was pretty cool.

Upcoming projects, where do you want to go from here?
Micah and I have been recording quite a bit at my apartment. I kind of want to keep releasing songs with photos, and then maybe release it as an album later. I am not sure exactly where I want to go from here, but me and the dudes (Micah, Jon, and Jesse) are working hard and bringing these recordings to life. I hope to play more live shows.

What inspires your music?
The whole shoegaze genre has been really heavy to me. I wanted to be a part of it really bad.

Why do you make music?
Because I have the chance to be a part of a bigger story than my own.

Anything you’d like readers to know that we haven’t asked you about?
I am just a blue collar worker with a great wife. I love my community. Everything I do is just my response to love for my local community, my family, gospel, and just people in general.
