What I Learned at Bandcamp: Littlefoot

Littlefoot, Bandcamp, Interview

Littlefoot is a surf-pop four piece from the Providence and Boston areas. The band consists of Erica Sutherland on vocals, guitar and keyboard; Derek Knox on guitar, Mary Burke on back up vocals and bass, and Mike Decosta on drums.

The group released a self-titled EP on Bandcamp in November 2013 and is currently working on album Night of the Living Dreams, due out in the next couple months.

Below, read The Spec‘s interview with songwriter and Littlefoot frontwoman Erica Sutherland…

How long have you been making music?
I started playing guitar in middle school. One of the first songs I learned was “Fade to Black” because my guitar teacher was into Metallica (or maybe I was the one who was into Metallica…). I started playing piano when I was four after my mom bought one at a yard sale. Derek has been playing guitar for about 15 years, and Mary just started playing bass (but she’s a prodigy so she picked it up quickly). Mike has been playing drums since he was born. Literally.

I just started writing songs a few years ago. Littlefoot started out in 2012 as my solo project – most of the songs are based on demos that I record and then bring to the band.

Who/what are your influences?
Definitely surf music and oldies from the 50s and 60s – The Ventures, The Tornados, The Beach Boys, The Shangri-Las, The Shirelles, The Everly Brothers, Francoise Hardy

What is your favorite song you’ve released and why?
Oh geez that’s a tough one. I think that’s like asking a parent which one of their kids is their favorite….I like “Sad Love Song From Someone Else” – the back story to that one is kind of interesting. My roommate’s girlfriend broke up with him and he said, “I wish I could write songs when I’m bummed out like you do…. can you write a song about how I’m feeling?” I think he was kidding, but I did it anyway. It cheered him up and it was kind of cool for me to be writing lyrics from someone else’s point of view. Derek has also mentioned that he likes that it’s our shortest song and it has the longest name.

Upcoming projects, where do you want to go from here?
We’re in the process of mixing our nine-song album, titled Night of the Living Dreams. It should be out in a few months. Also, I’m hoping to save up enough money in the next year to buy our very own mystery machine so we can finally tour/catch crooks.

What inspires your music?
Cheez-Its, Smartfood

What musicians or bands do you look up to?
Cyndi Lauper

Why do you make music?
Girls just wanna have fun.

Anything else you’d like readers to know that we haven’t asked you about?
Mike and Derek are both in awesome bands: Tapestries and Way Out, and Mary is famous on YouTube

Also, my mom thinks we sound like we could be on the Twin Peaks soundtrack.
