What I Learned at Bandcamp: Jonathan Jones

At 12 years old, Jonathan Jones wrote his first song, then he sold it to a local recording artist. “I remember writing the song and selling it to him for 30 dollars, that was a lot of money to me! It was the first time I actually realized that the art I was creating had a value to it.”

Born in Nebraska, Jones moved to Scottsdale when he was 15 years old with his single father. He began his music journey in the church choir, earning the nickname “Choir boy.” In high school, he formed a hip-hop group called The GoodFolks with two best friends.

Now, in his early 20s, Jones is creating music that encourages positivity, empowerment and self ehancement. His goal is to gain global recognition by “breaking the genre barrier.”

In a hip-hop culture that sometimes glorifies drug use, Jones is creating his own path. “I actually stray away from drugs, just for the simple fact that I would never want to jeopardize my career or put myself in a situation I don’t need to be in, y’know?” he says. “I’ve witnessed family members fall victim to drugs… It’s cool to sip on something every now and then, but that’s about it for me.”

Jones believes his audience is a group of people who seek melodic guidance. He offers his listeners not only a song but a message.

Upcoming projects, where do you want to go from here?
I’m working on my EP titled “The Awesome Factory.” Once we drop that, I’ll be looking to shop a few labels.

What inspires your music?
Positive vibes, black culture, college life, street fashion and just art in general. I also read a lot of literature, my favorite author is Richard Wright.

What musicians or bands do you look up to?
James Brown, Big L, Sam Cooke, MC Hammer, Jay-Z, DMX, Method Man, Common, Ray Charles, Queen, Fort Minor, Eminem… I can go on and on, ha ha.

It’s first nature for me. I live in the form of rap… seriously. I literally live in my own musical. It’s only right that I share it with the rest of the world!
