What I Learned at Bandcamp: My Invisible Friend
Italian trio My Invisible Friend has been playing together for around a year and this January released its debut, self-titled EP. The three-track album is available to purchase or stream on Bandcamp.
The Spec caught up with My Invisible Friend members Anna, Joe and Cristian, read what they had to say, below…
Who/what are your influences?
My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain, Ride, Slowdive are our most “traditional” influences. We’ve learned a lot also from Icelandic psych-gazers Dead Skeletons and from krautrock bands such as Neu!. And a bit of “nugaze” like Yuck. Pretty messed up, ye.
What is your favorite song you’ve released and why?
It’s so hard to tell which one is our favourite, they’re like children to us. Cristian thinks it’s “Eyes” because it sounds more like a classic. Joe loves “Dear Mary” ’cause he likes the ethereal feel in the first part, and the monolithic fuzz in the second one. He thinks it sounds like eating pizza and ice cream in the same dish.
Upcoming projects, where do you want to go from here?
We’d like to have a great and long tour through Italy and Europe!
If you could no longer be a musician, what would you be or do for a living?
Maybe the question should be: “what do we do in life, in order to be musicians in our free time?” haha. Two of us are studying at the university, the third one works. Joe has taken this question pretty seriously and says he’d like to be a butcher. An old-fashioned butcher, with his old-fashioned butcher’s shop and stuff.
What musicians or bands do you look up to?
Each of us has his own icons: while Cristian loves The Style Council and Oasis, Anna is an all-krautrock lover and Joe has mentioned “newer” bands like the Scottish Cherry Wave and Italian duo Throw Down Bones.
Why do you make music?
Music can be a way to throw out the stress of the week, but that’s not the only reason we do it. We really feel the need to make music. It’s what makes us feel complete.
