What I Learned at Bandcamp: Birds Are Indie

Fourteen years ago, Joana Corker and Ricardo Jerónimo fell in love. Today, they make sweet tunes for your eardrums via their band Birds Are Indie.

According to Jerónimo, Corker was very sad one night two years ago and he began to whistle to uplift her spirits. The couple made a song out of the tune, “we laughed a lot and so decided to try to write some more…”

The duo from Portugal plays everything from guitar and organ, to accordion, xylophone and harmonica. They released their first LP How Music Fits Our Silence in February. The album can be streamed for free on Bandcamp.

In their own words, “None of them knows particularly well how to sing and play. However, singing and playing seems to do them well.”

We recently caught up with the lovebirds, read what they have to say about their “indie” name and listen to their music below…

Who/what are your influences?
Lyrically, the main influence is the different stages and moments in a relationship. Falling in or out of love, loving someone who doesn’t love you, being afraid love is ending, being extremely happy because you found love, feeling completely insecure, feeling very confident, being sad for some reason, being happy for no reason at all…

And we listen to a lot of music since our early teens… REM, Blur, Scott Walker, Jens Lekman, Little Joy, Bowerbirds, Magnetic Fields, The Cramps, Joy Division, The Kills, Velvet Underground, Pavement, The Beatles, The Vaselines… it’s virtually a never-ending list…

How did you come up with your name?
It was kind of an inside joke… When we had some songs and decided to form the band, we thought to ourselves: We don’t know how to play so we should have an indie name… And to make fun of that whole idea of the indie label we got to think that there’s nothing indier than birds. So you may try everything, from retro glasses to classy shoes, from haircuts to lo-fi guitars, you’ll never be as indie as a bird.

Upcoming projects, where do you want to go from here?
After three EPs, two on the netlabel MiMi Records (Love Birds, Hate Pollen and Life Is Long, both in 2010) and a Christmas EP self-released last December, we just released our first LP called How Music Fits Our Silence on Murmürio Records (a label that we created to release our albums and some our friends’ records as well). So, we’re now focusing on playing more live shows to present this new record. For now, we’ll try to play a few gigs in Spain along with many Portuguese shows. And continue doing our thing, completely for ourselves.

What inspires your music?
Everyday life. Relationships between people. Arguments. Smiles. Bus and train rides. Lying in the grass. Some films and books. Travelling.

Why do you make music?
It started just for fun and we still do it for the same reason… Some people seem to like our songs and our live concerts, so as long as we enjoy it we’ll keep on doing it… It’s also a way to stay creative and try to add something yours and unique to this strange and unfair world…

Anything you’d like readers to know that we haven’t asked you about?
