What I Learned at Bandcamp: Action Jets

action jets, interview, bandcamp

Action Jets is a rock and roll trio from Phoenix that plays a combination of power pop, arena rock and punk pop. The group has played all over Arizona and is currently recording songs for its debut EP due out this spring.

Today, Action Jets released two singles off the EP, “Action Girl on Instagram” and “Action Party Epic Fun!

Below, listen to both singles, watch the video for “Action Girl on Instagram” and read The Spec‘s exclusive interview with the band…

Tell us a little about yourselves…
Action Jets is a rock ‘n’ roll trio, an antidote to the blasé, an alternative to the folk jam, a livewire to the masses, and a passionate take on great powerpop-indierock-punk rock of the four decades. We play fast, catchy guitar rock, full of melody, hooks and sing-along choruses.

Action Jets is the musical PAC of Action Dave (guitar/vocals), aka Dfactor Pop, with the formidable talents of the performing band of Action Gary (drums/vocals) and Action Jeff (bass/vocals).

How long have you been making music?
Action Jets formed in Spring 2014 to play rock ‘n’ roll gigs around the killer debut single of “Action Jets (Time for the)” b/w “Rock like Pollard,” both found at Bandcamp. Individually, we have been soaking up Radio Ga Ga since the early 1900s.

Who/what are your influences?
Musical influences include progenitors of subcultural musical movements from the last 60 years, like garage rock, arena rock, punk rock, classic rock, power pop, indie rock and more.

Chronologically, this would include:
1960s: The Shadows of Knight, Nuggets, The Byrds, The Stones, The Monkees.

1970s: Starz, UFO, The Ramones, The Clash, Joe Jackson, Slade, Generation X.

1980s: The Jam, R.E.M., Enuff Znuff, The Replacements, Husker Du, New Order.

1990s: Guided by Voices, Nirvana, Green Day, Teenage Fanclub, Weezer, Soul Asylum.

2000s: The Strokes, The Hives, Tinted Windows, Teenage Fanclub, Tsar.

2010s: Teenage Bottlerock, The Menzingers, The Orwells, Twin Peaks, Playboy Manbaby.

What can you tell us about the new EP?
Action Girl on Instagram” b/w “Action Party Epic Fun!” is our single from our upcoming EP. It will be out in the Spring 2015. We recorded songs in 2013 at Perfect Timing Studio in Phoenix. Action Dave mixed it. We think it rocks. Hope fans do, too!

Upcoming projects, where do you want to go from here?
Action Jets stands still for no man. We want to learn new chords, sing better harmonies and write better songs! Onward and upward!

If you could no longer be a musician, what would you be or do for a living?
Action Dave: Professional race car driver.
Action Gary: Professional storyteller.
Action Jeff: Professional gigolo.

What musicians or bands do you look up to?
See influence list above. More specifically, Action Dave admires the holy trinity of alt-rock songwriters – Robert Pollard (Guided by Voices), Paul Westerberg (The Replacements), and Bob Mould (Husker Du, Sugar, Bob Mould Band).

Why do you make music?
It’s better than sitting in a cubicle all day, ain’t it?

Anything else you’d like readers to know that we haven’t asked you about?
Action Jets lives on the web, and plays local rock shows in Phoenix, TempeScottsdale. Come out and see us sometime.
