What I Learned at Bandcamp: DENT

Dent, Bandcamp, interview

Phoenix-based three piece Dent released “Halfway” off its upcoming, debut EP on Feb. 5. The single will also be released as a split 7″ with Twin Ponies in a couple months.

The guitar pop band will kick off its Arizona to California tour at Stinkweeds with Bear State on Feb. 24.

Below, read The Spec‘s interview with Dent and stream “Halfway” on Bandcamp…

How long have you been making music?

We’ve all been playing music for most of our lives, but this band has been around for just over a year.

Who/what are your influences?

We’re big fans of heavy, driving riffs (bands like Pile, Viet Cong, Stove) and more mellow, prettier pop music (Duster, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Each Other). Currently, really into new Porches, Deerhunter and Palm.

What is your favorite song you’ve released and why?

Halfway” is the first song from our first formal release, so it wins by default… We’re excited to share the rest of our EP, though. The other songs on our Bandcamp were written and recorded by Josh a couple years ago.

Upcoming projects, where do you want to go from here?

We’re going to continue playing shows around town with our friends and keep getting out of town as often as possible to play at new venues, in new cities, and make new friends. We also really want to perfect our cover of the Buffy The Vampire Slayer theme song this year.

If you could no longer be a musician, what would you be or do for a living?

Other than not really making money being musicians, we are a solar power consultant, yard keeper and marketer.

What musicians or bands do you look up to?

Our friends that are consistently creating killer tunes and putting on amazing shows! Twin Ponies, Bear State, Diners, Roar, Pro Teens, Slow Moses… just to name a few.

Why do you make music?

Making music is probably the most natural creative outlet for each of us, and to make these songs together gives us a common goal to be excited about together. Playing music that inspires us is a hobby we all seriously value.

Anything else you’d like readers to know that we haven’t asked you about?

We’re so grateful to have played with all the amazing bands that we have thus far in our first year, and our intent is to play shows with bands that we really believe in. So stoked to continue playing with our friends this year and to keep pushing ourselves musically as we continue to develop our sound.

We’re doing a couple shows in California and Arizona at the end of this month with our friends in Bear State and we’re excited to release our EP at the end of this month. Stay tuned!
