Earlier this month, Mahogney Hope Turner was given the title of Performing Artist of the Year for Phoenix at the  RAWards semi-finals event. She will go on to compete against other artists in the performing arts category at the finals in Los Angeles in January.

Turner chatted with The Spec about musical influences, why she loves to be a performing artist and Pink, below…

TS: How long have you been performing? What is the greatest part about performing?
MT: I’ve been performing for five years and the best part about performing is a feeling that is both serene and electric that moves through me as I recite each word. It’s really unexplainable; you would have to be living within me to experience exactly what I’m talking about.

TS: What are your long-term goals?
MT: My long-term goals are to become a traveling performer I want to publish a book and teach workshops about the healing power of the spoken word. I also want to create a program that employs poets to go into schools and conduct spoken word workshops with students.

TS: Who or what inspires your work most?
MT: What inspires my work the most is music.

TS: Your first (or favorite) concert?
MT: Allen Stone at the Troubadour in West Hollywood. The experience was so life changing that I am naming my first book of poetry “The Day I Met Allen.”

TS: If you could hang out backstage with any musician, dead or alive, who would it be?
MT: I would love to have backstage with Joss Stone.

TS: Favorite song at the moment?
MT: This is very hard because I am in love with Pink right now, it’s between three of her newer songs. So I will say “Run,” it’s a song she wrote for her daughter.

TS: Favorite musician at the moment?
MT: Pink!

TS: Musician or type of music you like to listen to, if any, while you do your creative work?
MT: While I work I don’t listen to music but in order to be inspired I listen to music with soul and soul to me is any music that has feeling and meaning behind it. Like “Beam Me Up” by Pink or “Right to be Wrong” by Joss Stone (another one of my faves).

TS: Preferred music-listening device: vinyl, radio, cassette, CD or digital (MP3s)?
MT: Right now I am married to my MP3 but I would absolutely love to have a vinyl.

TS: All-time favorite or go-to musician?
MT: ALLEN STONE J
