Black Carl Captures Alaska: Ian Woodward

When one considers Arizona and Alaska in the same thought, not many similarities come to mind. Alaska is a northern state, surrounded by and filled with bodies of water and known for its cool climate, grade-A seafood and abundance of crude oil. While Arizona, territory of the south, is characterized by mostly barren land, mass production of dry heat, and Black Carl, proprietors of desert-soul music.

Sometimes two states that are seemingly worlds apart, overlap.

In July, Black Carl went “North to the future,” embarking on an Alaskan tour of 12 shows in seven cities over a two-week span.

The Spec equipped each band member with a disposable camera to document the journey, choosing film in favor of the less manipulated and more natural photos it can produce. Display screens, delete buttons and in-camera editing features on digital devices can undermine the basic concept of photography — capturing a moment.

Over 130 photos were taken. Throughout the week, The Spec will share the best photos from each member’s camera along with captions written by the musicians themselves.
