Viva Phx Q & A: David D’Alessio

David D’Alessio has been compared to Damien Rice, Duncan Sheik and Jack Johnson; lists John Mayer, The Police, Jason Mraz and Fun as influences; and has opened for Brett Dennon, Lifehouse, Colbie Caillat and many others.

The singer-songwriter, who is currently based in New York City, will return to Arizona (a place he has called home) and perform an all-ages Viva Phx set at Coffee One at 10 P.M. on March 7.

Very first concert you attended and a memory from it.
I’m told it was Santana –in me mum’s belly– I kicked really hard!

If you could have any musician (dead or alive) as a mentor, who would it be?
Jeff Buckley — I’ve never heard anyone with that sense of melody and freedom since. Such a tragic loss.

Very first concert you played and a memory from it.
Illegally in the street, at a street fair, yelling, screaming, drunk dancers. It’s about the same today!

Artist you would most like to collaborate with or have produce your music?
Beyoncé! Duh!

Personal truth that fans would be surprised to know about you.
I get my brows waxed.

How do you spend a typical day when you’re not touring or busy recording?
I make sure I take time to watch New York 1, check the weather, the rails, and road report.

One artist or album you could never get tired of listening to?
Kid A Radiohead.

Earliest music-related memory you have?
My father playing guitar.

Nicest thing a fan has ever said, or given, to you?
“I like your hair!”

Interesting fact about your newest release.
All the girls on the cover were complete strangers!

Xperience you will never forget.
Playing outdoors on 4th of July in Arizona at 3 P.M.. I think the sound guy passed out from the heat and I had to wear a wet towel over my head.
