An Answer to the Day-Old Question: #WhoisPaulMcCartney?!

OK, I’ll admit it.

I grimaced a little bit when I saw people referring to Justin Vernon‘s Bon Iver as Bonnie Bear following this year’s Grammys.

Sure, a lot of people don’t know how to pronounce Bon Iver (bone-ee-vare), or the story behind the name, or even who Vernon is. What do you expect in a post “Who-the-Hell-is-Arcade Fire?” world?

But you know what? There are people out there who have no idea who Paul McCartney is. No “that name sounds familiar,” or “ahh, it’s at the tip of my tongue.”

No idea.

This news may be hard for Beatles lovers and music mavens to believe. I mean, as Devendra Banhart once matter-of-factly sang, “Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are the only Beatles in the world.”

All facepalming aside, #WhoisPaulMcCartney?!

Well, he was member of The Beatles and Wings, and for many years has been a successful solo artist, receiving numerous honors and awards along the way. In fact, just this month he received his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (finally!) and was honored Person of the Year by MusiCares.

One (of the many) reasons you should know who Mr. McCartney is: He gives good advice…and it’s all in his lyrics. I hate to get all technical, but he’s written and co-written nearly 200 charted records, many of which have reached Top 10 or No. 1 status.

Now that you have a general idea of who this living legend is, let’s see what he has to say:

On people…
“We all know that people are the same where ever you go / There is good and bad in everyone / We learn to live, when we learn to give each other what we need to survive / Together alive.”
<a href=""><img src="" alt="Play" style="border:0px;" /></a>Song: Ebony & Ivory

On death…
“At the end of the end / It’s the start of a journey / To a much better place / And a much better place / Would have to be special / No reason to cry / No need to be sad / At the end of the end”
<a href=""><img src="" alt="Play" style="border:0px;" /></a>Song: The End of the End

On teen angst…
“How come no one older than me / Ever seems to understand the things I wanna to do?”
<a href=""><img src="" alt="Play" style="border:0px;" /></a>Song: C Moon

On things…
“Things can go wrong, things can go right / Things can go bump, in the dead of the night”
<a href=""><img src="" alt="Play" style="border:0px;" /></a>Song: Beautiful Night

On being right…
“Ohhh, we believe that we can’t be wrong”
<a href=""><img src="" alt="Play" style="border:0px;" /></a>Song: Back Seat of My Car

On living…
“Days go by so quickly / When you’re having fun / But life is never easy / Even in the sun”
<a href=""><img src="" alt="Play" style="border:0px;" /></a>Song: I Do

On fine lines and decision making…
“There is a fine line / Between recklessness and courage […] When your decision makes a difference / Get it wrong, you’ll be making a big mistake…Whatever’s more important to you / You’ve got to choose what you want to do / Whatever’s more important to be / That’s the view you’ve got to see…”
<a href=""><img src="" alt="Play" style="border:0px;" /></a>Song: Fine Line

On love…
“We don’t need anybody else / To tell us what is real / Inside each one of us is love / And we know how it feels”
<a href=""><img src="" alt="Play" style="border:0px;" /></a>Song: Somedays

On rearing children (future generations)…
“Help them to learn (help them to learn) / songs of joy instead of burn, baby, burn (burn, baby, burn) / Let us show them how to play the pipes of peace / Play the pipes of peace”
<a href=""><img src="" alt="Play" style="border:0px;" /></a>Song: Pipes of Peace

On shared human emotions…
“When your body is coming apart at the seams,  and the whole thing’s feeling low / You’re convincing yourself that there’s nobody there,  I know / I know how you feel”
<a href=""><img src="" alt="Play" style="border:0px;" /></a>Song: Somebody Who Cares
