The SPECifics: Royal Teeth and its Rise to Fame

Royal Teeth

Act Naturally, the debut EP of Louisiana-based Royal Teeth, was released in May 2012 and propelled the band into the indie-music spotlight. The EP features four original songs, one remix by The Sound of Arrows, and a great cover of The Knife‘s 2003 track “Heartbeats.”

Opening track “Wild” was picked up as the promo song for the Oprah Winfrey Network and Buick, and in winter 2011 the band won Nikon‘s “Creative Invite,” which awarded the group a free trip to Austin for SXSW 2012. While at SXSW, Royal Teeth was discovered via Twitter by CNN, which resulted in the band playing a special session for CNN.com.

It has been a quick journey to the spotlight for the six Louisiana-born musicians that make up Royal Teeth, but the band is enjoying the ride and only has plans to move forward.

On March 6, Royal Teeth will play at Crescent Ballroom with A Silent Film and Gold Fields. The concert is part of Rock ‘N’ Roe, which raises money for Planned Parenthood.

The Spec interviewed vocalist Gary Larsen about the upcoming show and band’s plan for the future, read what he had to say below…

How did all of you meet and form the band?
We are all from Louisiana and have all played in bands around the area. (except for Nora [Patterson]) It was great timing with everyone looking to start a new project. This is Nora’s first band. Stevie [Billeaud] told us about a girl that he knew that could sing when we were looking for a female singer. We Facebook stalked her a bit and she joined the band about a week later.

Who are some of your favorite musicians?
We have six members in the band so we have a lot of different musical influences. Some of mine (Gary) at the moment are Michael Jackson, Frank Ocean, Coldplay, Passion Pit, Sam Cooke. And tons more.

What inspires your music?
Our music is all about energy. Positive energy inspires us. Capturing a moment in time that feels special in one way or another. That is my goal when I write for Royal Teeth. Musically, I’m inspired by everything from indie to mainstream pop music, Motown, MJ, Elvis, and so much more.

What are your goals for 2013?
Releasing our debut record! We are very excited for that. We are also releasing our first official music video for “Wild” on March 8. We hope to continue touring and meeting more amazing people.

Did you expect Royal Teeth to blow up as quickly as it did? Do you think that has made things harder or easier as a band?
I did not expect that. I don’t think it has made things harder for us. I feel the pressure more than I used to, but I think we are all up for the challenge. It has made it much easier to focus on the band full time. We are very thankful for that and for everyone that has helped get us here so quickly. There is nowhere else we would rather be.

As a six-member band, is it ever hard to find one collective, creative vision? What is the music-making process like?
It hasn’t been difficult. We know what we want our sound to be so we are very open with each other when we are working through the songs together. I’m very lucky to be with some great, open-minded musicians so it makes the writing process enjoyable. Everyone knows the role they need to bring to the songs. Each member of Royal Teeth provides his or her own unique element to the music, which makes it special to us as a group.

What can fans expect at your upcoming show at Crescent Ballroom in Phoenix?
Energy! We plan to bring as much energy as we can. We want our shows to feel special and to have each person leave with some kind of connection to the show and to the music. We love to interact with the audience and create a moment that they can remember.

Anything else you’d like readers to know about the band?
Thank you so much for your support and we can’t wait to see you!
