Summer Ends Music Festival: Q&A with Banana Gun

Summer Ends Music Festival will feature live performances by The Replacements, Foster the People, Capital Cities, Descendents, Violent Femmes, Fitz & the Tantrums and more than 20 other popular acts. The inaugural three-day festival will take place September 26-28 at Tempe Beach Park.  Tickets are on sale now: three-day passes for $250 and single-day passes for $65.

Through September 24, The Spec will be publishing interviews with bands on the lineup and giving away tickets to the event.

Banana Gun released Love Instinct in March of this year and will perform on day three of Summer Ends Fest. The five-piece rock band has its own distinct flavor that is hard to pin to just one genre. It’s a little jazzy, bluesy and a lot of good.

Below, read The Spec‘s interview with drummer Ian Breslin and enter to win a pair of tickets to the festival…

Song of yours you would recommend to someone just being introduce to your music?
This is a tough question to answer. We’re not locked into a specific genre. We write to what we feel and our influences are broad. Our song “Mirror Mirror” is probably the song people should listen to first. If one would choose to listen to another, they might be a bit surprised as to what they hear next. However, “Mirror Mirror” shows where the band is today.

Unexpected talent you or someone else in the band has?
Our lead singer Kevin [Loyd] is a third-degree black belt.

Must-have thing while on tour or in the studio?
We all love us some Cuban sandwiches and *green paint* in the studio. Not exactly sure how we ended up eating Cubans. But every time I have one now, I want to record an album. During the recording of “Love Instinct” we also figured out that Jim Beam really helps too.

Music award, honor, achievement or induction that you would be most excited to get?
Awards and nominations are weird for us. We get them from time to time. It’s not that we don’t appreciate or pay attention to them, because we do…I think what really matters to us though is being a part of a great music community, as well as having the fans, friends and family that support us. We’re blown away when someone compliments us after a show, or dances during a performance…which happens a lot these days, and we’re very appreciative and proud of that.

Explain the moment you knew that you wanted to be a musician?
Interesting question. I don’t really have *the moment*. It has always been who I am. I remember holding my dad’s drum sticks at a very young age…beating the shit out of pots and pans…probably then. Listening to music and being a fan of music was huge in my house growing up. It’s one of the things that really brought my family together. I think I just wanted to be involved in music right from the very beginning.

Recent concert you attended as a fan and your favorite memory from it.
It has been a minute or two since I’ve been to a concert. Banana Gun is really looking forward to seeing Queens of the Stone Age next month. We’re all going to get together and go. Nothing is more inspiring than going to a show as a band and we all love Queens. Can’t wait. We’re all really stoked to see the Violent Femmes at the Summer Ends Fest, too.

Finish the following sentences:

Everyone thinks my music is about hippies dancing around with flowers in their hair, but I think it is really about the doom and destruction the zombie apocalypse will bring upon humanity.

Number one rule of being a musician or in a band is play, write, record, and tour with your friends. I cannot imagine doing any of those things with someone who wasn’t.

Don’t ever underestimate the power of a digital delay pedal.

Summer Ends Music Fest will be a rockin’ good time.
