Musician Cass McCombs has been a busy man.

In 2011, he released his fifth and sixth full-length albums Wit’s End and Humor Risk, respectively. McCombs, who is widely known for his nomadic tendencies, has also been touring and will continue to do so through February.

The folk musician has listed The Beatles and American folk music as influences, but his travels, job juggling and loved ones, have influenced his art as well. “…he describes the lifestyles and feelings of those that surround him, with more love than judgment. McCombs is a mirror.”

McCombs released Wit’s End in April on Domino Records. The album, which features “sounds that conjure the colors purple and black,” begins with the heartbreaking track “County Line” and gradually falls into a deeper darkness.

Humor Risk, released in November, is “an attempt at laughter instead of confusion, chaos instead of morality, or, as fellow northern californian Jack London put it: “I would rather be ashes than dust!’”

Both albums include recordings made over three years in Los Angeles, New Jersey, New York City, Chicago and McComb’s current home, San Francisco.

Frank Fairfield is a 20-something-year-old musician from California. His music, style and demeanor feel borrowed and old timey, yet new and relevant. Fairfield’s “down home” sound is a bit blues, bango, folk and fiddle.

“Music comes out of the landscape,” says the young musician, who began by doing performances on the streets of California. Fairfield was discovered by Foreign Born’s lead singer, Matt Popieluck, while playing at the Hollywood Farmers’ Market. Popieluch was more than impressed and began working with Fairfield, landing him a gig with LA-based John Webster Johns and soon after, indie folk band Fleet Foxes.

In 2009, he released his self-titled debut album on Tompkins Square. Fairfield returned in May 2011, with the release of his Out on the Open West LP.
